Absolutely! Don’t be shy about mentioning your concerns to your registered dental hygienist (RDH) the next time you visit your dental office. You are not alone! It’s estimated that over 40,000,000 Americans suffer from some form of oral malodor. And for those who don’t, we are all interested in maintaining the freshest breath possible! As the prevention and education expert in the dental office, the RDH not only cleans your teeth, but checks for other things that can go wrong in your mouth, like oral cancer, gum disease and tooth decay-which can contribute to bad breath.
It most cases, bad breath comes from odor producing bacteria present in your mouth from the back of the tongue and deep pockets between the teeth and gums (periodontal disease). The RDH will begin by professionally removing offending bacteria and buildup as well as assessing gum health. Be sure to ask about tongue cleaners – these are the most effective tools for cleaning the tongue. Finally, your dental hygienist will make recommendations for products designed to safely eliminate bacteria associated with bad breath and gum disease as well as neutralize bacteria-produced odor. Remember-fresh breath is only a dental hygienist away!
